Meet Hupstein

Hupstein Eng is a Wellington-based guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, who performs everything from Jazz to Indie Rock. Raised in Upper Hutt, New Zealand, Hupstein fell in love with music as a kid when he performed his first solo, playing "wipeout" in front of his local community ukulele group. After getting a taste of the spotlight, he's been hooked ever since, and has become an active member of the Wellington music scene, playing in a wide variety of bands and ensembles.

Hupstein's main project is Studio4, his four-piece indie rock band formed with his closest mates from high school. The band has been performing together for several years, and has built a strong following in the Wellington music scene. They're currently working on their debut EP, set to release in early 2027.

Alongside that, Hupstein is finishing up his final year of studying a minor of Jazz Performance at the New Zealand School of Music. During his time there, he has been able to explore his love for jazz and improvisation, forming his own jazz quartet, CHOPS, who play everything from straight-ahead swing to contemporary fusion. The same group also performs as the Hupstein Eng Quartet / Trio, where Hupstein sings classic vocal Jazz.

Hupstein is an in demand session musician, performing with a wide variety of artists and ensembles across Wellington, and has been featured on several recordings and releases. He is available for session work, live performances and collaborations, and is always looking for new opportunities to create and perform music.

Hupstein is also a passionate music educator, teaching guitar, singing, and music theory to students of all ages. He believes that music has the power to bring people together and enrich our lives, and he is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and love of music with others.
